Once a year, the troop invites parents and siblings to a family campout. This year we were able to book a prime beach campsite at Jalama Beach near Santa Barbara. This beautiful beach is just south of Vandenberg AFB and offered miles of sand and surf. Scouts enjoyed the usual swimming, boogie boarding, and surfing. As an added bonus there were interesting fossil beds and lots of sea life to explore. And of course, as on every troop campout, we enjoyed some great food and a fun campfire every night. The scouts even cooked up an excellent Father’s Day breakfast for all the dads – and more amazingly, cleaned all the dishes too!
Several scouts in the troop worked together to complete the cycling merit badge. This is a tough “Silver” badge which means it is one that can be credited toward the Eagle rank. Scouts learned bike maintenance and operation plus road safety skills. They then went out on seven group rides ranging from 10 to 50 miles. For the big 50 mile ride they rode to the top of the San Gabriel River bike path in Azusa, crossed to the Rio Hondo bike path at Whittier Narrows, and then headed down the Los Angeles River bike path, all the way to Long Beach – from the mountains to the sea!
